When I was growing up in Toronto, kids used to chant “Sticks and stones can break my bones but names can never hurt me”. When you grow up, however, even in a free society like Canada, your free speech may depend on whether you have the funds to fend off a lawsuit. When you speak to power, even more so! Shutting someone down this way can be referred to as “Lawfare” – using an intimidating and strategic lawsuit to shut down discussion – in other words, “warfare” by other means.
Daniel Bordman, a young Toronto journalist and comedian, often uses sarcasm along with biting humour to go after the truth. In a video, he questioned why Erin O’Toole, a Conservative Party leadership candidate, would choose as his campaign chair, Walied Suleiman, who, according to Mr. Bordman, allegedly has admitted associating with the Muslim Brotherhood.
Mr. Suleiman allegedly has ties as well with Muslim Relief Worldwide, an organization with ties to Hamas.
The allegations above have not been proven in court. They remain to be heard, but they can only be heard if Daniel raises enough funds to have his day in court.
I urge you to help if you can!
Daniel Bordman – a Fierce Free Speech Warrior
Daniel Bordman is a political commentator being sued by Erin O’Toole’s Campaign Chair, Walied Soliman, for $2.5 million for talking about, among other things, their connections to Islamic Relief Worldwide, which Israel and the UAE say has ties to Hamas.
For raising the issue of tax dollars potentially going to extremist organizations, Mr. Bordman has been slapped with thousands of dollars in legal fees to force him to be quiet during this election cycle.
Watch him describe his current predicament.
